Rouse, Pavo et testudo (specimen)

Document in PDF format (3 pages)

This PDF contains the tale Pavo et testudo, the third of a series of 22 tales about animals which is part of the collection edited in 1935 by professor W. H. D. Rouse. They were conceived to be told by teachers to their students, and are therefore well suited to anyone who is learning Latin.

However, their level is not that of a complete beginner: they contain, for instance, clauses that require subjunctive, verbs in every tense and less frequent words.

That’s why two other series of the same 22 tales are in preparation, where each story is rewritten in simpler forms, suitable for complete beginners. They will give the you the opportunity to listen to each story thrice, thus approaching the original and most difficult version in a progressive way.┬áThe new tales will be available both for reading and listening as soon as they are ready. I hope they will be a useful resource for both self-learners and teachers.

The original version of the tale follows the text from W. H. D. Rouse, Latin Stories for Reading or Telling, Basil Blackwell, Oxford 1935, with some minor exceptions. You can read the original text here.
